Form
Fine
lines.
I laid three ellipses over each other at different angles. The lines stay fine as they near the type.
Atlas, an independent design study
A large word, three orbits and a yellow dot. Atlas is an independent typography study I built from these few elements.
Visual layout
I placed the word in the center and drew thin ellipses around it. I kept the lines light, so the large letters carry the composition’s weight.
I placed the yellow dot on one of the orbits, as a small accent of color between the pale ground and the dark letters.
Form
I laid three ellipses over each other at different angles. The lines stay fine as they near the type.
Typography
Large serif letters. The dot at the end of the word is as heavy as the letters.
Space
I kept to the word, the orbits and the yellow dot, and left the rest of the space empty.
Implementation
In the second composition I darkened the ground and turned the type yellow. The orbits stay the same, while the changed word and colors shift the drawing’s weight.
I drew the ellipses and the dot with CSS; the type is set in the browser, in the typeface I chose. The whole composition scales with the width of the screen.
Your site
In Atlas I worked with few elements: one word, fine lines and generous space. The same discipline works on a psychologist’s or a lawyer’s site.
One main message on each page, a calm layout that doesn’t crowd the text, and a single accent color that draws attention only to what matters. Visitors don’t have to hunt for where to look.
Just tell me what you do and what kind of site you need.
